One of the earliest examples of Americana, originally stitched by hand during the American Revolution. The "Betsy Ross" is perhaps the most recognizable early flag of American Independence, and symbolic of the original 13 rebel states that broke off from British rule in 1776. The story goes, it was presented to General George Washington by American upholsterer Betsy Ross shortly before Independence was declared.
The reality is shrouded by mystery and national mythology, with the actual flag not showing up in the historical record until 1792. Even though it's origins are still hotly debated, there is mistaking what the "Betsy Ross" means when you see one!
