The Republic of China existed in it's original inception after the successful 1912 Xinhai Revolution against the Qing Dynasty. It originally flew the "Five Races" flag for it's first several years of existence, emphasizing a tenuous sense of unity immediately after revolution. The relative stability was not to last, as factions turned to warlordism and the then-fledging Communist Party of China split from the dominant Kuomintang (KMT).
As a result, a new flag was raised bearing the "blue sky, white sun, and red earth" colours of the KMT. It remained the battle standard for the Republic of China throughout their war against both the Japanese and Communist Chinese from 1928 onwards. It was eventually forced off the mainland after over two decades of vicious and uninterrupted combat.
Bloodied and controversial, this flag speaks the memories of the common soldier in old China, who through skill and fighting survived two decades of hard fighting. It remains the last of the anti-Communist factions dating back to the Xinhai Revolution that lay claim to mainland China, even after decades of exile in Taiwan.
