"NO HOME RULE! Would ya like to try a cheeseburger Bobby Sands?"
The "Red Hand" is a symbol with an ancient past, dating back to the ancient kings of Ulster. We know of writings about the bloodied "red-handed" Irish kings of old, but we can't know for sure what the ancient Pagans were referring to. There are many stories, but can only know for sure if we had a "bloody" time machine.
This particular variation of the flag was first adopted in 1924 with the Tudor Crown (changed later to the Edwardian Crown), the "Red Hand" banner of Ulster was the official flag of Northern Ireland until 1972. This decision was made as the Troubles intensified, and the scope of the British military's Operation Banner grew. The flag is decisive as it has been seen both as a symbol of Ulster identity, but also loyalist sectarianism in the UK and Ireland.
Either way you swing, it's a pretty interesting historical flag to have!
