Country of Origin:
Authentically reproduced Sam Browne belt, issued to British officers from the 18th century onwards and widely adopted by friend a foe alike. Named after the illustrious one-armed General Sir Samuel James Browne VC, GCB, KCSI, he is generally recorded as the first British Army officer to utilize a shoulder strap with his leather sword belt in the 18th century. This was done to ensure his sword scabbard maintained a good deal of retention when being drawn, and gave the wounded warrior a rather distinctive look. Many British officers quickly followed suit, and by the time of the Boer War, the Sam Browne had become standard issue.
The distinctive belt continues to be worn in the British Commonwealth by officers of various regiments and law enforcement formations. Perhaps as a testament to it's incredible popularity (or notoriety), it was even adopted by various Irish rebel groups in the early 20th century (as a compliment to the "Broad Black Brimmer") and a certain Austrian painter with an odd moustache.
